　前回ご紹介した1971年8月・カリフォルニアでのライヴ・アルバムに続いて10月～12月に、アーケストラはヨーロッパ巡業を行いました。そのうちツアー終盤のノルウェー公演がバンドによって正式にライヴ録音され、LP用に編集されてインディー・レーベルのブラック・ライオンに買い取られましたが、この『Calling Planet Earth』は1998年まで発表されませんでした。今回のツアーはゴスペル・ファンク色が増していたのが同作からもうかがわれ、『Universe In Blue』が1作限りのコンセプトではなかったことがわかります。大学の客員教授体験がサン・ラの説教癖に火をつけたか、翌1972年にはサン・ラ主演のSF映画にして伝説的な黒人至上主義カルト・ムーヴィ『Space Is The Place』が製作されるのです。
　この変化はサン・ラには黒人性の追求であり自然な流れだったと思われますが、前1970年のヨーロッパ巡業ではサン・ラはフリー・ジャズの伝説的バンドとして好評を博していたので、今回サン・ラの意図したゴスペル・ファンク色の強化は少なからず当惑を持って迎えられました。観客動員は前年の評判から好評だったようで巡業先諸国でテレビ出演が依頼され、11月11日のオランダでのコンサートはテレビ放映されています。『Calling Planet Earth』のように短縮編集されていないので、このコンサート音源は公式なCD化はされていませんが、テレビ放映の音声トラックから起こしたナロウ・レンジのコピー盤でしか出回っていませんが1971年秋ツアーのフル・セットを聴ける貴重でエキサイティングな演奏です。今回、肝心要のエジプト3部作が部分リンクしか引けませんので、こちらも(テレビ放映のエアチェック盤ですが)参考までに載せておきます。音質はともかく、内容はノリノリの好ライヴです。

Technische Hogeschool, Nieuwe Aula, Delft, The Netherlands 11-11-71
The Arkestra appeared at the Technische Hogeschool, Nieuwe Aula in Delft, on November 11, 1971. Once again, the state-run radio station recorded the concert and broadcast it on November 14. According to Campbell and Trent, portions of this concert were also televised on Dutch TV on November 17, but the tape no longer exists in the VPRO archive (p.176). The audio recordings do exist, however, and, fortunately for us fans, the entire three-hour concert was re-broadcast in 2001. The sound quality is exceptionally good.

　ツアー先のライヴ録音をすぐさまインディー・レーベルに売りつけたのは、この際念願のエジプト公演を決行してしまおうではないか、という無茶な計画によるものでした。古代エジプト人こそが黒人民族の発祥であり、すなわち有史以降の地球上の文明はすべて黒人によるものではないか、というのがアーケストラ結成時からのサン・ラの持論でアーケストラのメッセージでしたから、ヨーロッパ巡業終了の12月中旬にバンドはエジプト入りします。そこでテレビ出演("Live in Egypt I" A面)、パトロン宅のホームパーティ出演("Live in Egypt I" B面)、カイロのボールルーム(社交ダンス会場)出演("Nidhamu")、"Live in Egypt I"と"Nidhamu"に入りきらなかった演奏をまとめた"Horizon"の3部作が録音されました。サン・ラの音楽などまったく知らないエジプトの観客に向けた、実現しただけでも驚異的なライヴで、数日間の予定が次々依頼を引き受けているうちに2週間の滞在になったといいます。
　アルバム発売は"Nidhamu"、"Live in Egypt I"、"Horizon"の順でしたが、ややこしいのは"Live in Egypt I"発表後に"Nidhamu"が"Live in Egypt II"と改題されたり、かと思うと"Live in Egypt I"ですら"Nidhamu"と"Horizon"("Starwatchers"とも改題版あり)に準じて"Dark Myth Equation Visitation"や"Nature's God"と改題されて短期間のうちに平行プレスされていることで、この3作は「エジプト3部作」とまとめて1作とした方がいいでしょう。音楽性は意外にも50年代アーケストラのまろやかな部分がフリー・ジャズ化した後の音楽性とバランスを取っており、サン・ラの実験的ムーグ・ソロを含め焦点の絞れた内容になっています。CD化では正規再発レーベルのArt Yardからアルバム未収録曲を足して倍の収録内容になった『Horizon』と、2 in 1CD化で『Nidhamu』と『Dark Myth Equation Visitation/Live in Egypt I』を合わせたものが2008年に出ており、CD2枚で揃うこのエジプト3部作は1965年の『The Heliocentric Worls of Sun Ra』以来の冷たいフリー・ジャズからの転換を明確に示すものだといえるでしょう。
