その分いつものアーケストラ作品のような破天荒さや良い意味での乱雑さには欠けるのですが、中堅インディー・レーベルのラウンダーではサン・ラも聞きやすく親しみやすいアルバム作りに積極的に取り組んだ、といったところでしょう。大世帯でありながら緩い部分は緩くし、スタジオ・ライヴに近い状態で録音が進められたのはアルバム・タイトル曲「Somewhere Else」がPart 1とPart 2に分かれていることでもわかり、これは1988年には時代遅れになっていた16ないし32トラック、ひょっとしたら'70年代並みの8トラックの磁気テープによるアナログ・レコーディングのようですが演奏途中でテープが終わってしまい次のテープで演奏の続きを拾った形跡があります。普通こういう場合には演奏をリテイクするものですがサン・ラが拒否したのかラウンダー側が良しとしたのか、トランペットだけで5人、ドラマーだけでも3人いる22人編成のバンドに、これが楽譜通りに演奏を決める白人ビッグバンドならともかくサン・ラのレコーディングなのですから演奏にミスという概念はなくとちったのは録音エンジニアの方ならば録音事故もそのまま収録するのがサン・ラの流儀です。中堅インディーのラウンダーでさえ、いや通好みのラウンダーだからこその対応とも言って良く、また本作のポップさはファンクやディスコ、フュージョン系のアルバムでかつてサン・ラが試したものとも違う'80年代的な軽さという面でも異色で、マイルス・デイヴィスやクインシー・ジョーンズの当時の方向性と近いものです。ただしサン・ラはいつでも一皮めくれば底なし沼のようなフリー・ジャズを懐に秘めていたこと、それがポップな演奏にもドスを効かせているのは確かです。
