ERGO SUM “Mexico”
Along with the two records by Nurse With Wound favorites Moving Gelatine Plates, Ergo Sum’s weird and wonderful album “Mexico” is an unusual portal into the intense creativity of early 1970’s French music. True, the bands are not musically similar; yet these three albums are distinguished not only by their instrumental richness, but by their unceasing sense of adventure. We’d go so far to say that Ergo Sum presents one of the most distinctive experiences in a rock idiom (apart from Zeuhl music juggernaut Magma) to ever come from France. The band’s one and only album (1971) features the unique voice of Lionel Ledissez?his guttural sort-of-English language delivery described as being “somewhere between Family’s Roger Chapman and a drunken Champs-Elysees taxi driver,” although more sober comparisons to Tim and/or Jeff Buckley have also been made. The compositions develop at a relaxed pace; incredible jazz-inflected guitar, flute, piano and droning violin swirl around the vocals, and keep one submerged in, yet attentive to the intimate mood. Tracks full of instrumental richness?they simmer, rather than blaze, which makes the rewards ever so great for patient listeners. Bonus tracks include the superb ‘All’s So Comic,’ one of the highlights of the “Puissance 13+2” Theleme label anthology, as well as both sides of Ergo Sum’s musically relevant single from 1972. A fulsome 28-page booklet includes band history, photos, lyrics, and a contemporary 1971 review from Superhebdo magazine. A three o-clock in the morning, slow burn album if ever there was one.

Ergo Sum biography
Formerly known as Lemon Pie, this group was formed by singer Ledissez and keyboardist Guerin in 68, Ergo Sum released only one album in 71. This album was the first one on Laurent Thibault's new label Theleme and was recorded at the famous Herouville studios. Singing in English, Ledissez's voice was certainly an acquired taste (reminding of Family's Chapman), but the group's many other assets certainly made up for that: Meynet's violin and Guerin's flute and the frequent use of percussions graced their blending of rock and jazz, but not really being a jazz-rock group either. The group then recorded a single with a fairly different line-up and the last concerts saw Francois Breant and Perru (ex-Cruciferus and future solo artist), JM Truong (pre-Zao) and Marc Bertaux. Breant and Perru will then form Nemo (not to be confused with the 90's French symphonic group though) for one jazz-rock album.

フランス産プログレッシヴ/ジャズ・ロック・バンドErgo Sumのアルバムとしては唯一作になる名盤1971年1stの、2007年再発盤。ピアノやフルート、ヴァイオリン、オルガン等を取り入れた夏の涼風のように心地よいジャズ・ロックの演奏と、ヴォーカルの(全部をぶち壊しにしてしまいそうなギリギリの)ダミ声が合わさり、唯一無二の音楽性を生み出しています。特に表題曲Mexicoのポコポコしたイントロや後半の高揚感、Albion Impressionsの転調を繰り返す軽快な展開が素晴らしいです。Nurse With Woundもお気に入り(Nurse With Wound Listには未掲載)の作品で、同様にフランスのバンドでリストに掲載のMoving Gelatine Platesがお好きな方にもお勧めです。元のアルバムに、追加で1972年のシングルTijuanaと、1971年のフレンチ・バンドのライブ・コンピレーション盤Puissance 13+2からAll's So Comic (この曲も素晴らしいです。)、更にMexicoのインスト版を収録しています。Nurse With Wound List系プログレ/クラウトロックも積極的に再発しているLion Productionsの中でも、素晴らしい再発ものの一つだと思います。Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! だがカルロス・サンタナがメキシコのローカル・アーティストだったら、音楽的スケールもポピラリティやセールス実績ももっと限定されていたと思われる。今回取り上げたエルゴー・スム(デカルトの「我思う、故に我あり」ラテン語訳のCogito, ergo sum、コーギトー・エルゴー・スム、cogito = 私は思う、ergo = それゆえに、sum = 私はある)はメキシコ人ヒッピー・ヴォーカリストを中心にフランスで結成、活動していたバンドで、引用した英米サイトの評にもある通りヴォーカルがイギリスのバンド、ファミリーのロジャー・チャップマンに酷似している上、フルートとヴァイオリンをフィーチャーしたアンサンブルもファミリーのサックスとヴァイオリンのアンサンブルからの影響が大きい。エルゴー・スムはアルバム1作で終わったバンドだったが、この『Mexico』は1971年という早い時期ではカトリーヌ・リベロ + アルプ、ゴング、マグマ、アンジュらフランス70年代ロックの大物に先んじて突出した達成を示した隠れた傑作になっている。
イギリスのロックの影響は確かに強いが、ファミリーと異なり、ゴング、マグマ、アトールらの指向性と一致するフランスのバンドらしさはリズム・アレンジのジャズ・ロック性にあるだろう。ファミリーはもっと重い8ビートだったがエルゴー・スムのリズム・センスはもっとジャズ的で、同時期にフランスではゴングのジャズ・ロック化に先手を打ち、マグマよりも軽快な乗りを持つムーヴィング・ゼラチン・プレートというアンダーグラウンド・バンドもあったが、エルゴー・スムの方がソリッドなサウンドで成功している。日本ではフランスの70年代ロックではアトールの『L'Araignee-Mal (邦題『組曲「夢魔」』)』1975が屈指の人気アルバムで名盤だが、『Mexico』のヴァイオリン入りアレンジを聴くと影響関係があったのではないかと思えてくる。また長い間フレンチ・ロック幻の名盤筆頭格だったエマニュエル・ブーズの『Le Jour Ou Les Vaches... (邦題『迷宮の扉』)』1974、『Dans Quel Etat J'err (邦題『彷徨の歌』)』1979の作風にも通じる。
ローラン・ティボーのプロデュースは1971年の時点でこんなに冴えていたのか、という発見もある。1992年のMuseaからの再発盤はティボー自身の監修でLion Productions盤も内容を踏襲しているが、今回各種データ・サイトを調べて、アルバム『Mexico』本編はオリジナルLPとムゼア再発盤以降はアルバムAB面が逆転しているのを初めて知った。CDでタイトル曲「Mexico」から始まり「Second Rebirth」で終わるアルバム本編を聴くと実に決まっていて、オリジナル盤ではタイトル曲がB面1曲目だったのは単純なAB面のプレスミスだったか、もし当時の意図通りだったとしてもプロデューサーのティボー自身がAB面を再発盤で逆転させたのは、要するにオリジナル盤のAB面配置は失敗だったということになる。それだけのことでも、アンダーグラウンドのバンドのデビュー作にはつまづきの石だったのかもしれない。フランスのロック・シーンではこのアルバムは数年先を行っていた。むしろイギリスでなら成功できただろうと思うと、ラスト・シングルにはセカンド・アルバムを作れなかったバンドの全力の抵抗が見え、このレヴェルのバンドでも続かなかった当時のフランスの国内バンド需要が推察されもする。それは当時の日本の国内バンド需要と近かったかもしれない。
